About   The Team

In 2006, Roof Unit was set up in a retired soap factory in E14 by curator, Chris Littlewood, and photographer, Toby Smith, with the aim to provide a supportive workspace in which photographers could develop their practice.

Five years later and with a slightly different team, Roof Unit expanded into a renovated, purpose designed loft space in Bethnal Green with the aim to provide desk and studio space for 20 creatives, complemented by an engaging programme of talks and events.

Sadly within 9 months, we were given notice on the occupation of our building. Having achieved our mission statement ‘to provide a supportive environment that encourages diversity, a shared passion for creative work and a sense of community’, we decided, as a collaboration of photographers, that we would continue to thrive as an inspiring community even without the physical space to operate from.

Now turning to a wider network, we invite you to join us on the last Wednesday of every month in the Scolt Head for a photography social and opportunity to chat to fellow colleagues and friends about the industry at large or simply discuss your favourite ale!  We hope to see you there…

‘Moving out from working at home into a large collective space was ideal and always recommended. The sharing of ideas, equipment, and outlook on career is greatly appreciated in this sometimes isolated freelance environment’ Jason Larkin, Roof Unit resident.
